What is the difference between OTT and CTV?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two terms OTT (Over-The-Top) and CTV (Connected TV) are often conflated, causing confusion across the industry.\u00a0 When it comes to digital video advertising, our advice is to delineate between the content type and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Content Type <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it an episode of your favorite TV show, a news clip, or a sporting event? Full\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episode Programs and long-form video content can be consumed across screens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Environment<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the video being watched on a desktop, a mobile device or a connected TV? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connected TV is a TV screen, but unlike linear television, which requires a cable (think Spectrum <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or Xfinity) or Satellite (like DISH) subscription, a Connected TV is accessible through the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>CTV Devices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Amazon FireTV Stick, and Roku<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Game Consoles:<\/strong> Playstation, Xbox<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smart TVs:<\/strong> TVs from manufacturers like Samsung or LG,\u00a0 with digital capabilities to connect to the internet to access video content through pre-installed apps TVs from manufacturers like Samsung or LG,\u00a0 with digital capabilities to<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most companies are adopting the IAB\u2019s definition from its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iab.com\/insights\/guide-to-digital-video-advertising\/#index-104\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guide to Digital Video Advertising<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>IAB definition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is focused on the big screen, and describes <\/span>OTT<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a \u201cdevice that can connect to a TV (or functionality within the TV itself) to facilitate the delivery of internet-based video content (i.e. streaming boxes, media streaming devices, smart TVs, and gaming consoles).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that if an advertiser\u2019s goal is reach, some OTT sellers are packaging content that includes a combination of small and large screens.\u00a0 If you are after the \u201cliving room experience\u201d or augmenting your linear TV buy and decide to invest in CTV, make sure that you ask for proof that your ad was played to completion on a connected TV device. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. How can brands, agencies, publishers unlock the value of CTV? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connected TV (CTV) offers marketers a highly effective opportunity to make direct connections with their customers.\u00a0 However, as digital ad spend shift towards this environment, so will the attention of fraudsters and their effort to capitalize on unprotected environments like CTV. Everyone in the advertising ecosystem has a responsibility to ensure the brand\u2019s investment and reputation is protected in all digital environments. Brands need to know what they\u2019re buying and that their media investment is driving business outcomes. In addition to working together to agree on standards and accelerate adoption of those standards,\u00a0 agencies and publishers need to continue providing trust and transparency and provide automation tools to scale this new environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. What can marketers do to diminish fraud fears and take advantage of CTV?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask questions to make sure that you understand the inventory you\u2019re buying and that you\u2019ll get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visibility into where your ads ran. Here\u2019s a review of the practical recommendations we<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0provided in our last <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/integralads.com\/apac\/insider\/ott-webinar-qa\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTT Webinar Q&amp;A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid higher IVT (invallid traffic)\u00a0 rates by making sure that you and your media partner are aligned on the definition of what you\u2019re buying.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Favor direct publisher relationships and those who provide more transparency until the industry unlocks scalable measurement across all inventory sources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster the adoption of the VAST 4.1 and above, which introduce essential elements for scalable measurement.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. <b>What responsibility do supply sources have in ensuring that they are not providing fraudsters a platform to defraud buyers?<\/b>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media suppliers provide a platform for brands to effectively connect with their consumers. These suppliers have a responsibility to buyers to provide engaging content and delivering it to real people in the intended environment. Several suppliers are partnering with industry bodies to prevent their platforms from being used to defraud buyers.\u00a0 Their goal is to create a basic set of technical requirements to safeguard against this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishers can take a couple of steps to ensure and demonstrate that their supply is both validated and verified, with no option for fraud: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any instance of buy-side validation, the client IP address should be sent, rather than the server IP address.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual user agent (which identifies the exact device) should be passed to the server to avoid spoofing. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, Publishers should try to support the most recent IAB standards, whether we\u2019re talking about Open Measurement or VAST 4.x . For the latter, they don\u2019t have to support the entire spec, there\u2019s a small subset of macros and recommendation that will go a long way to fight fraudsters.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>5. What\u2019s your take on viewability measurement on CTV?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viewability is not possible today as javascript, which is required for viewability measurement, is not universally supported in the Connected TV (CTV) environment.\u00a0 Measurement will require the industry to set standards for this new environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. What is your take on brand safety in CTV?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apps are used in Connected TV (CTV) environments, but there is no centralized app store or naming convention like there is in mobile.\u00a0 IAS is researching signals required from publishers to analyze content for brand risk. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Could you speak to the ITP issues on iOS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ITP (Intelligent Tracking Prevention) applies to Safari browser tracking.\u00a0 Connected TV (CTV) ad impressions are not impacted by ITP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. One big issue in OTT is CTV buys being inadvertently delivered to smaller screens like desktop and mobile. Does your fraud detection solution measure this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an important issue <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">given the high demand for CTV (connected TV) inventory, making it one, if not the most, lucrative channel for video advertising. The current manifestation of fraud in the market is mainly spoofing the device, aka, converting a desktop and mobile inventory to be perceived as CTV.\u00a0 Leading video platforms like Innovid can provide this measurement and IAS\u2019s solution verifies the completion of your ad in a connected TV environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Could you speak to the importance of competition in your ad stack?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/na2.totalaccess.emarketer.com\/chart.aspx?r=229135\">eMarketer predicts digital ad spend to grow half a trillion dollars by 2023<\/a>.\u00a0 Digital\u2019s accelerated growth provides marketers endless opportunities to engage with consumers, but also attracts bad actors who are capitalizing on this shift in media consumption.\u00a0 Competition not only fuels innovation and speed at which these innovations are delivered to market.
