From the old standard of television, to current avenues like mobile and social, there are a lot of channels to choose from. But in order to succeed in advertising today, it is imperative to understand how people consume media. This understanding allows advertisers to develop strategies that take advantage of where and when people are focusing their attention, especially as consumers are shifting to mobile and social channels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given IAS\u2019s collaboration with so many advertisers\u2019 on digital campaigns, we were able to expand on previous research by examining viewers\u2019 internet usage while watching TV. According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eMarketer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c85% of internet users surf the web\u201d while watching TV. While many of these are using the web to find more information about the show they&#8217;re watching or to post about it on social media (#thebachelor), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/consumerist.com\/2016\/01\/28\/nearly-90-of-millennials-cant-stop-looking-at-their-phones-when-watching-tv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">48% of millennials say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they use their phone explicitly to avoid watching commercials (often by checking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recode.net\/2017\/6\/8\/15760778\/facebook-tv-advertising-chart-autoplay-video\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). In exploring data for two of TV\u2019s biggest events, the Oscars and football\u2019s most important game, IAS was able to find additional evidence that consumers are tuning out television ads in favor of the internet. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The graph below shows that during the 2018 Oscars broadcast \u00a0a majority of commercial breaks, internet traffic spikes during the start of the commercials, and then drops as soon as the show starts up again. The most likely explanation? People are using their phones\/tablets during commercial breaks instead of engaging with television advertising. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Oscars_Superbowl_Superbowl.svg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-87509\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Oscars_Superbowl_Superbowl.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IAS also observed this behavior during football\u2019s biggest game. Despite the hype, and a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/nfl\/news\/super-bowl-2018-how-much-do-super-bowl-commercials-cost-nbc-coca-cola-hyundai\/1qap05f9qd6hd1kn2i9lahwlk3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$5 million dollar price tag for a 30-second television spot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, internet traffic still peaks during commercials, suggesting that that\u2019s when people are more engaged with their mobile devices. However, there are few ways that the big game is unique. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, there was this year\u2019s \u201c30 seconds of blackness,\u201d where due to a brief equipment failure in the 2nd quarter, viewers saw a black screen, no ads, no game, just a black screen. \u00a0Apparently, some people were so surprised that there was nothing playing, they thought their tv was broken. This explains why during this \u201ccommercial\u201d break internet traffic actually went down as people tried to \u201cfix\u201d their TVs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, despite viewers typically turning away from commercials, there were times where tv was compelling enough to decrease internet traffic. \u00a0IAS analysis suggests that internet traffic dipped nearly 20% during Justin Timberlake\u2019s half time performance. It turns out that even if you don\u2019t like football or commercials, Americans like JT enough to get offline for at least 15 minutes (or maybe they were hoping for another left shark). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Oscars_Superbowl_Oscars-2.svg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-87516\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Oscars_Superbowl_Oscars-2.svg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step to successful multi-device advertising is understanding where the audience&#8217;s attention is. \u00a0IAS analysis finds that as audiences shift attention away from tv advertising, there are new opportunities to catch their focus on mobile. \u00a0But mobile, and digital as a whole, has its own set of challenges that television doesn\u2019t have to account for. \u00a0Viewability, fraud, and brand safety risk aren&#8217;t problems typically associated with linear television but they routinely waste digital budgets and imperil brand value. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/integralads.com\/apac\/solutions\/mobile-in-app\/\">Click here<\/a> <\/strong>to learn more about how IAS provides the data necessary to understand the impact of your mobile advertising efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New IAS data captures the way audiences shift their attention to mobile during major television events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":296932,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[218,211],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-296931","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insights-apac","category-mobile-in-app-apac"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.4 (Yoast SEO v27.4) -
