{"id":296951,"date":"2018-03-09T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-03-09T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/integralads.com\/insider\/avoiding-false-positives-strategic-implementation-keyword-blocking\/"},"modified":"2023-07-12T11:41:46","modified_gmt":"2023-07-12T11:41:46","slug":"avoiding-false-positives-strategic-implementation-keyword-blocking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/integralads.com\/apac\/insider\/avoiding-false-positives-strategic-implementation-keyword-blocking\/","title":{"rendered":"Avoiding false positives: Strategic implementation of keyword blocking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"vertical-align: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As brands continue to prioritize advertising in brand safe digital environments, advertisers are still fine-tuning the balance between brand safety and scale. \u00a0While no advertiser wants to inadvertently appear next to undesirable content, most also don\u2019t want brand safety thresholds so rigorous that they wind up blocking valuable inventory that is relevant to their target audience. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to blocking by content categories like adult, hate speech, or violence, and adding specific websites to exclusion lists, advertisers may also choose to block by specific keywords. For example, blocking the keyword \u201cterror\u201d could prevent ads from serving on a respectable news site reporting on the \u201clatest terror attack.\u201d \u00a0Keyword blocking provides advertisers extra flexibility by allowing them to block content that may not be right for their brand, even if it passed content or exclusion list requirements. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if advertisers are not strategic in their selection of blocked keywords, they may miss out on valuable brand safe inventory for their desired audiences. \u00a0Below are some examples of blocked keywords that might unintentionally limit inventory depending on the advertiser:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cShooting\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: While trying to avoid content on gun violence, an athletic apparel company would not reach consumers on an article mentioning how the Golden State Warriors\u00a0<\/span>went on \u201ca 15-0 <b><i>shooting<\/i><\/b> run\u201d last night.<\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cLas Vegas\u201d | \u201cVirginia\u201d| \u201cCharlottesville\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0&#8211; In continuing to distance itself from shootings and an alt-right rally, a realty company fails to advertise in growing real estate markets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cIS\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; By trying to avoid an abbreviation for Islamic State, advertisers inadvertently block the word \u201cis.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to ensure strategic keyword blocking, IAS recommends advertisers ask themselves the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Understand Personal Brand Safety Thresholds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: What type of content is and is not acceptable for our brand to appear next to? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What are the consequences<\/strong> of appearing next to unsafe content?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Identify Dual Meaning Keywords:<\/b> Are there any keywords that could block valuable inventory relevant to our target audience?<\/li>\n<li><b>Remove Generic or Short Keywords<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Can we remove any generic terms that are blocking safe content and are too broad to catch unsafe content? \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Revisit Previously Blocked Words: \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the current news cycle, does it still make sense to block this keyword?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brand safety is always going to depend on a brand\u2019s individual preferences and strategy. \u00a0However, with a little strategic thinking, brands can confirm their brand safety settings are appropriate without unnecessarily limiting scale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/integralads.com\/apac\/insider\/20-blocked-keywords-february-2018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see February 2018\u2019s Most Blocked Keywords.
